Pay day Takeaway

ISO - 250
Focal Lens - 18mm
F - Stop - 7.1
Shutter Speed - 1/30

We see a clear example of economic divide, A business closed and covered in graffiti next to a nice and shiny bookies there may not be much story behind this image although visually it is appealing as someones lively hood appears to be suffering as the takeaway gives us the impression that the business has closed down the clientele has migrated next door to bet. the lighting of this image is very clear it appears that the exposure wasn't that long until we look over to the right hand side of the image on the edge of the roof and chimney it seems the the light is creeping over it. The angle tilts to the left which allows for a full view of contrast.

Delivery

ISO - 3200

Focal Lens - 34mm
F - Stop - 4.2
Shutter Speed - 1/2000

I like how this image shows an idea of prosperity with vans delivering goods in the foreground and a building being constructed i like how the colour is very dull and similar. the ISO for this image is extremely high which upon closer inspection was a bit too much combined with the very high shutter speed i feel that there was too much exposure on the image as you can see at centre just between the structure over the vans and the blue building there is a section where the light somewhat over powers the building. compared with the image above there is a sharp contrast between the two images only a few miles of distance between Canary Wharf and Stepney is not far but yet we see one are grow and another shrink

A Dream to Far

ISO - 250
Focal lens - 66mm
F stop - 8
Shutter Speed - 1/160

This image is very mysterious as in the foreground we see a run down railway bridge with graffiti over it and yet in the background tall towers of glass and steel pierce the sky as. when i see this i feel as if the the high rise buildings act as a mirage and the bridge itself looks more like an iron wall seperating the rich and the poor. The ISO for this image is low which allows for more of a composition between the clouds and natural sunlight it also allows for a more clear outline from the buildings this would also be boosted by the fact that the shutter speed is considerably lower and the image delivery which would allow for more detail as there would be less chance of shaking on my part.

The fence

ISO - 250
Focal lens - 25mm
F stop - 8
Shutter Speed - 1/100

There is a good use of depth of field in this image we see two buildings the one on the left looking very run down and neglected with satellite dishes almost growing out of it and on the right more modern with cranes shaping the future behind its almost like the new buildings are replacing the old with the new. it also seems that the fence travels round and separates the two types of building. the ISO stands at 250 although the background appears as if the image has had too much exposure and drowns out some of the images' "landmarks"

Breach

ISO - 400
Focal Lens - 26mm
F stop - 4
Shutter Speed 1/400

I like how this image has decaying buildings in the foreground and a large citadel like building in the background stood towering over the decaying buildings. We see in the centre of the image what appears to be a gate like object broken and damaged almost as if the people are trying to break their way into upper class area. although this had somewhat of a higher ISO then most of the images in the portfolio i chose to add effects to the image i wanted the image to give a more depressing feel to the image when i see the brick wall it reminds me of an photograph taken in the 60s or even 80s however i feel as if i made it too dark as the wall on the left looks entirely blacked out.

Cuts

ISO - 400
Focal lens - 85mm
F stop - 5.6
Shutter Speed - 1/250

I decided to call this image cuts as the building which holds a billboard saying make the cut is neglected and run down and surrounded by old decaying buildings and a for rent sign in view the image is taken at a odd angle i feel as if the image would have been better served if it was taken a higher ground. although i attempted to edit this image to make it more appealing i cropped out any irrelevant parts of the image to focus on the buildings more i also increased the sharpness of the image and decreased the brightness which made the sky very grey. this image by far is not my best in my portfolio

The Corner

ISO - 400
Focal lens - 18mm
F stop - 4
Shutter Speed - 1/100

I like where this image was taken it gives the image mystery it makes you wonder what lies beyond. the building in the background looks half demolished and rotting compared with the building in the foreground newly refurbished gleaming with reflections although some of it has been tainted by graffiti the quality of the image is very good due to the shutter speed however i feel that the ISO is too high which has caused an over exposure which drowns out the clouds.

Housing Boom

ISO - 250
Focal lens - 48mm
F stop - 8
Shutter Speed - 1/100

I like how this image compares construction with destruction we see in the background new modern buildings being built and and old buildings in the foreground with scaffolding around them being repaired. the quality of this image is very well done the exposure is perfect we see the composition of the clouds which have a beautiful colour contrast between them and the buildings the ISO was at a perfect setting at 250. much like the image the fence it gives the impression that new buildings are replacing the old ones turning affordable housing into high class housing

Glass jungle

ISO - 3200
Focal Lens - 35mm
F - Stop - 4.5
Shutter Speed - 1/4000

This image doesn't really tell us much in the way of Economic divide however if we pair it with another image for example The corner we see in this image an array of highrise buildings covered in glass but compared with the corner there is a lot of decay and neglect. The settings for this image are again extremely high which has led to an over exposure of light with and ISO rating of 3200 and a shutter speed at 4000 the light drowns out some of the detail along the buildings i feel as if the exposure was dramatically shortened a much more detailed image and a better composition from the clouds.

On this day I managed to film my last few scenes, I filmed a "Bridge Scene" which fills the gaps between the ending of the film and the middle i also filmed the Beginning scenes which set up the tone and give and idea of the film. For the opening scene of my film I Required props for this part of the film so i purchased food from the Co-op to create a restaurant as i had to change my Idea from a party to a restaurant due to logistical reasons I also had to set up the table for the Scene. Again I decided not to use a tripod for this scene as i thought not using it would not be more personal although looking back at the footage I feel that if I had used the tripod the shots would have been more tidy. I felt that the Restaurant scene was the biggest to film logistically for the scene i needed a sound man a Camera Man and the main cast. I must admit as i was filming this scene i had trouble with the sound Some parts of the scene were quiet and others were some what loud I feel that this may be an issue i need to address in the post production Edit

Diaries - Economic Divide

10/2/15
Today I went out and took photographs with the intention to capture a good depth of field specificly aiming for the foreground in focus, the background in focus and a wide depth of field the first image keeps the foreground in focus and the background and for the second shot reversed. my initial ideas were to keep the cap in focus and the background blurred this alllows for the colours of the cap to immediately drawn into focus.

12/4/15
Today I went to take pictures around Canary Wharf this image I took. I was attempting to capture this image for my portfolio at first thoughts I thought it would be a nice picture and I began thinking about how i would use it for my portfolio however I couldn't really see moving forward with this image so I use it a practice I look at it now and notice that ISO is way too high and the fact that the image is over exposed and we look to the right of the tree we see that its somewhat glossed and very bright I feel that this may be a "water hazard" as on the day there was a lot of rainfall on the day.
12/4/15
I also used my time in Canary Wharf to practice my photographic techniques we see this image above where I captured these row of bicycles we see a depth of field where I focused on the seat of the bike in the foreground and in the background we the area out of focus. At first when i took this image i thought i could just use it for practicing technique but looking at the image now i perhaps could have used this image in my final portfolio as i could the same image where i focus on the bikes and use the same technique in a more deprived area and compare to images with the backgrounds. With this one having office blocks and nice trees i could get one where i have run down council estate buildings or perhaps decaying high street buildings in the background and the bikes in the foreground.

Interoperation of the Brief - Economic Divide

When I think of economic Divide I immediately think of rich bankers walking past homeless people when they go into Waitrose a good photo opportunity with a strong narrative but the use of techniques are limited. However the use of techniques isn't completely ruled out. I also think of really tall sky shattering buildings of glass and steel towering over old worn down council estate buildings

I will try to represent this through images that have a strong narrative that are visually stimulating and poignant images that make a statement. In the East end of London there are lot of examples of economic divide. I will aim to capture architectural images new buildings with old or perhaps an expensive car next to a rotting old banger

There will be some problems that i may face whilst creating this portfolio, when i go out to a location that i planned to go to i may not find what i am looking for or i may not the best spot to the picture i want. In addition to this i may find a picture that involves a person or people that to me represent economic divide it may be necessary for me to ask them for permission before taking the picture there is a chance that the people in question will respond negatively so i would have to move on.

Research - Economic Divide

This image Clearly represents the Economic divide we see on the left a poor women begging with her cane and yet we see on the right a manikin wearing very expensive clothing the image crops out the pedestrians walking the background which puts emphasis on the poor woman the angle of the shot is a wide angle which allows for both the manikin and the woman to be in the frame

This image is very thought provoking we see a black and white image with a rich banker in the background on his phone where he could possibly be looking at shops and yet we see a homeless man walking carrying his belongings. As the image is in black and white the homeless man and his belongings are in colour which gives the man emphasis we see him  with a plastic bag where quite possibly the man on the right is holding a shopping bag.

This image i like because it shows the canary wharf area in the distant background and council estate buildings in the foreground. This is a clear example of economic divide where we see a banking district with some of the most high class jobs, shops and homes in London bordering one of the poorest boroughs in the city. I like how the image was taken and the timing of it with the grey clouds over canary wharf almost makes it look like en evil presence gathering over the area like something out of a fantasy film.

This image is a good example of economic divide. We see two separate images combined together to make a statement on the right we see a council estate with very dull colours and looking vandalised with people standing out the front compared with the image on the left with a very nice Georgian house with a nice expensive

With the research i have gathered i now have an idea of the photos i would like to capture. With these images i see a lot if comparison between the rich and the poor i feel that there can be as much narrative in a photograph about buildings as there is in a photography involving people. I have a brief plan on how i will get images like this for my portfolio I plan to travel to numerous different locations within the east end I am considering travelling to Canary Wharf and the surrounding area as it is a financial district and a few moments away there are a lot of council estate buildings and new tower blocks side by side next to each other. I will also Consider travelling around Aldgate east and Shoreditch as the city of London borders with the east end where i believe there will be a lot of opportunities to capture new office blocks and skyscrapers next to old worn down factories there may also be the occasional photo opportunity to capture and image of a banker next to a market worker or even a homeless person. I think when i capture my portfolio i shall use a DSLR this will allow me to get a better result in terms of aperture, depth of field and exposure.

Today I continued to film. I filmed my final scenes to get an idea of what it would look like however I think i am going to film an alternative scene outside. for this scene i had trouble making it seem realistic as the location in which i filmed was "On a stage". The equipment I used for this filming comprised of a camera and a sound kit I again chose not to use a tripod for this part of the film as this part would be very creepy and intense so i thought the idea of using a camera with free hand to film the scene would help to emphasize the drama of the scene. The cast and crew i needed for this scene were the two main Protagonists, Sound man, Camera Man and my self.

Today i began shooting for my final film project. I didn't start chronologically i wanted to get the more quieter parts of my film out of the way. I began filming Act 2 which involved me traveling to the locations in which the film would be set i began filming and capturing the different angles of the scene, i repeated this for each of the scenes that i filmed. For this segment of the film i elected not to use a tripod for all scenes that i filmed i wanted and thought that the film would be more dramatic if some of the scenes where there was dialogue Gis

The film will be a thriller about a rich couple who are living the high life but then a hitman is chasing the couple and then the man begins to freak out and get really paranoid gradually the hitman catches up to the couple and then he kills himself the woman then looks at the corpse then looks at her husband who is wearing the exact same clothes and then she shoots him and falls and goes to sleep when she wakes up she realizes it was an illusion and she is in a asylum.

Content analysis is a type of method to analyze content in this case i shall be analyzing my super hero film which is Captain America the First Avenger. The data that i will be Analyzing is defined by the props, narrative, characters and settings. i propose the idea that most super hero films if not all follow these general conventions. typically In a super hero film you will have a predictable plot line where the hero comes to terms with his power and has to save the world and win the girl. These are the conventions that I will prove in this article.

The narrative for Captain America: The First Avenger is single strand because we follow Steve Rogers and his story much like Thor or The Dark Knight rather then a film like watchmen where we follow the narratives are multi strand where they follow multiple character's storylines. This is one of the many conventions Captain America: The First Avenger follows.

Throughout the super hero genre there are many types of conventions that make a superhero film. I believe Captain America: The First Avenger follows these conventions almost to the letter.

The film takes place during the second world war the main protagonist Steve Rodgers a small man from new york who dreams of going to fight the Germans in Europe but lacks the physic to join the army. A very heroic man who will stand up to the bully in aid of the little man a very typical back story of a super hero. After countless attempts at joining the military he finally gets the opportunity to serve his country het gets noticed by a exiled German doctor Abraham Erskine he recruits him for a secret military project created by the Scientific Strategic Reserve (SSR) to give a solder a serum that will turn them into a super solder, another convention superhero gets given something which gives him superhuman strength. As follows a montage of Steve Rodgers doing shows to generate support for the troops only when he does a show in war-torn France he gets put in his place and learns of his friends capture, learning of this he decides to prove everyone wrong and goes to rescue his friend this is when he is fully confronted buy the main antagonist red skull the leader of a scientific branch of the Nazi government known simply as hydra.

With many storylines the protagonist often goes through hardship in order to overcome his foe this is very apparent during captain America as he looses his closest friend from childhood this fuels his revenge and contributes toward the demise of the antagonist. Another generic convention would be the setting most superhero films are set in a major metropolitan city such as New York or Chicago for example in Man of steel the film is set in a fictional city known as metropolis which is theoretically based off New York. Although the film starts off In New York the setting changes to war torn Europe. In addition the antagonist is very cliché it is a person who wants world domination and to oppress it he often has superior weapon this is clearly seen in Captain America as the Hydra Division has laser weapons created from the Tesseract and the Americans using ordinary weapons this is almost like the big guy stepping on the little guy but as always the little guy overcomes.

Another convention of super hero films would be the narrative, for captain America the narrative is first person as we see throughout the film the story portrays Captain America’s story from a small man into a super solder through this we see his relationships and interactions with other characters and how this effects him there is scene where his closest friend dies we only see this from his point of view. We see how this effect his emotion towards the enemy especially with a super hero film the final fight between the protagonist and antagonist, the protagonist is has a moment where his emotions become angry and enraged begins violently attacking his foe. Most super hero characters have unique signature props that give the hero their identity for example Captain America with his shield or Thor with his Hammer.

Furthermore a typical convention of a super hero film is a woman the main protagonist almost always has a woman that either falls in love with him or is his sidekick in Captain America the moment he gets his “superpower” Agent Peggy Carter begins to develop an attraction toward him gradually as the film progresses we see the relationship between Agent Carter and Captain America however this is only seen through Captain Americas Point of view which relates back to the narrative and how almost Captain America is used as a vessel to portray the story compared with The Dark knight Rises which uses a multi strand narrative to portray the storyline from both the protagonists and antagonists point of view.

Another convention for the super hero genre would be the camera styles the majority of shots are wide angle to cover a large action scene this is the most common use of camera shot within the super hero genre as it captures more action and contributes toward the emotion of the scene. In addition a convention would be most super hero films are set in major metropolitan area for example New York, Los Angeles or in the DC universe super heroes are set in their own cities based of real world ones for example New York and metropolis and Chicago for Gotham.

The plot for captain America follows him as he tracks down a Nazi hell bent on world domination. The film follows a McGuffin Principle whereby the protagonist is hunting an object Like Captain America hunting the Tesseract although we see red skull hunting this at the very start of the film but only see this object in small segments of the film. For half of the film we see Steve Rodgers Develop his character from a small person into a superhuman and we see him come to terms with his power and how it changes him, Uncle Ben once said “With great power comes great responsibility”. Captain America adopts this and grows from it throughout the first half of the film and he uses this to fight his enemy.

I believe Captain America follows these generic conventions as they somewhat symbolize a super hero film to state that super hero films do not follow these conventions is very uncommon there are only a small number of films that do not follow these conventions one for example would be Watchmen this film is not like any other super hero film it is more eccentric at most it only follows a handful of conventions.

At first i wanted to create a Drum&Base remix but i elected to create a 8 bit remix which would mean i would completely have to change the sounds and re work it. when i returned on Friday the 17th of October to the project i decided to abandon the Drum&Base target and opt for an 8Bit version i started by changing the I/O to ES P
I kept the original track completely in tact i only manipulated the sound and changed it to 8 bit i turned the frequency right down to zero as well as anything that could effect the reverb once i had done this i had listened to the track and began to look for right the beat to go along side it because just an 8 bit version was very bland and basic.

On Tuesday 21st of October i returned and began looking for loops to add to my remix at first i wanted to add an 80s era beat but then i thought this to be ridiculous so then i decided to add a club beat a simple drum kit looped alone its sounds basic but with the original chords it gives the the beat depth
in addition to the beat i also copied the original chords and and changed them back to a piano as its keeps the original song present, however instead of having and original piano i discovered Piano Motions it allows for the music to travel this blends well with the 8bit and the drum beat. in addition to this i also added a cello segment to help transition the beat.

When i returned to the piece of work on Monday 27th of October i began to change the tempo as i wanted the song to give the impression that it was a robot or a computer that was malfunctioning as i was aiming for an electro genre. So i slowed the tempo to simulate the system crashing and then there would be a gap and the next part of the song would kick in
As i listen back the gap between the slow tempo and the next part of the song was too long i decided to add in a sound bite. I recall a scene from the movie Pacific rim where the crew are about to give up but then they have one more ace up their sleeve i added this because i wanted my remix to have narrative.

Format

Name of TV Show/Film: Eastbound & Down
Show type:
Genre: Comedy
BBFC Rating: 15
Aspect Ratio: 16:9

Narrative

Narrative Structure: the linear narrative portrays the downfall of a famous baseball players career and his attempt re integrate at the beginning theres is a summary of his life and how it started with glory but slowly fell to pieces then there is a transition to present day where his life has completely fallen apart. The narrative follows a chronological order for audience to follow. The main protagonist acts as if the world revolves around him he believes that everyone wants to be with him. He follows an ethos that he created himself through an audiobook for example there is a scene where Kenny is sitting in his truck.

  Description of the feature:
This episode shows the downfall of the major league baseball player Kenny powers and how he readjusts back into normal life in his home town Shelby he encounters from his past that he tries to reminisce. He attempts rekindle old flame with his former lover April who teaches art at the school he now attends. The episode sees Kenny powers hit rock bottom and rise from the ashes like a phoenix.

Technical

Describe any outstanding features of the filming technique:
Throughout the episode they use a lot of camera movements and panning to set up punch lines for comedy scenarios. for example there is a scene where after a summary of kenny powers' life and it shows him sitting down and the camera slowly pans out and reveals he is becoming a teacher. In addition they also use close up to portray the emotion of the character there is a scene where there is a argument and they use a close up to add comedy to the situation. This helps with the story because the cinematography helps deliver the narrative. Furthermore throughout the episode they are a lot of wide angle shots. For example the scene where Kenny powers is about to teach his first lesson and the camera follows him much like a tracking shot walking towards the class. The camera is at his side then it pans and shows the children the emotion of the scene portrays how someone once was great they have now fallen.

How is this production filmed? How is the single-cameratechnique used?

The way is Eastbound and Down is shot is that the team use a single camera, they use a technique such as first person this can be seen in episode 2 in addition they often have to redo shots at different angle. In addition to this they the program uses tracking shots as well as an establishing shot in the first episode it pans towards a baseball stadium to set up the next scene where it shows Kenny powers with a close up. Later on in the show there is tracking shots that is used to aid in the emotion of the scene
As seen in the image above it shows how a tracking shot sets up the scene it helps to fill in a portion of the plot it assists with the narration.

Describe the set up of one of the scenes (discuss lighting, sound and other technical details)

The opening scene straight after the summary of Kenny powers life there is a low angle shot of him sitting a desk looking very depressed and there is a caption saying Several shitty years later then the angle switches to a side angle showing people next to him then a panning angle up showing more people an then a man at the desk says Welcome to Shelby county school system and then the camera switches back to Kenny powers to portray the emotion

Choose another single-camera production and make a list of comparisons between the two.

For Eastbound & Down the technique uses close ups and camera panning to express the emotion of the show and also to help deliver a punch line for a joke it also uses a lot of close ups to portray the passion and sometimes the body language of the protagonist. In addition the show uses a lot of narration about metaphors and life. In contrast to Eastbound & Down the British sitcom Peep Show uses monologues to help summaries a dilemma furthermore the show also uses first person view for the episode first person throughout their whole show. This is rare technique to use especially the entire duration of the episodes the show uses first person shots. it is my opinion that this technique is used to enhance the comedic experience this is helped by the facial expersions as they are more visible.
